Trentino is ready to welcome an experimental project on the management of wolves, whose behaviour in some cases is a public safety issue. 'For some time the Province has been working to identify the best solutions for the management of large carnivores. So much so that we have even obtained an opening from Minister Roberto Cingolani for an experimental project dedicated to the wolf,' were the words of the president of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti, speaking this morning during the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety chaired by the prefect Gianfranco Bernabei, and which was also attended by the mayor of Folgaria Michael Rech, the director general of the Civil Protection, Forestry and Fauna Department Raffaele De Col, the heads of the territorial police forces, representatives of the Trentino Forestry Corps and Ispra. The meeting was convened following the episode on Saturday afternoon on the Cimbri highlands, where a dog was preyed upon by a pack of wolves, in the presence of its owner, who witnessed the scene a few dozen metres away. According to what has been ascertained, there are more than 20 wolf packs in the province: one of them moves between the Vigolana, Folgaria and the Vicenza area. "It seems important that the local institutional representatives who have spoken today have raised the issue of public safety: an approach that we consider highly appropriate. The reflections that have emerged will be used to define future actions that we will define in collaboration with Ispra for the implementation of the action plan for wolf management in Trentino. In the meantime, the Forestry Corps will continue its monitoring work, also on the basis of genetic traces. On the basis of any new problematic or dangerous behaviour, we will certainly be called upon to intervene," concluded President Fugatti.
