General information
Climate change is accelerating the melting of glaciers around the world, which are becoming thinner and more fragile. The tragic collapse in Marmolada in the summer of 2022 is a sign of their rapid evolution towards new equilibria with the current climate, and is a "sentinel" of possible wider scenarios in the Alpine context.
The Cabina di regia delle aree protette e dei ghiacciai (steering committee for protected areas and glaciers) has for some time now been carrying out a reconnaissance of the study, monitoring and research initiatives on Trentino's glaciers and periglacial areas developed by the various competent bodies.
At the same time, the need emerged to ensure the effective dissemination of the accumulated knowledge to local authorities and all citizens. This consideration gave rise to the Glacier Days, a cycle of meetings on the theme of glaciers and high altitude alpine environments.
The meetings are organised by the network of parks in the provincial territory in collaboration with the Muse - Science Museum.
The initiatives, divided into in-depth meetings and guided outings on the territory, represent a valuable opportunity to periodically address the various themes related to glaciers and high altitude alpine environments, starting from their vulnerability, but also delving into the geomorphological aspects and those related to their history, to the "memory" they leave to the communities.
Goals
The glaciers initiative is part of the agreement that entrusts MUSE with a set of activities of common interest relating to monitoring, analysis, database management, communication and dissemination in the field of biodiversity for the three-year period 2022-2024.
