'Quo Vadis Europa': Romano Prodi and Stefano Sannino confront each other

"Quo Vadis Europa', where are you going Europe: a very topical question, also in the light of the forthcoming European elections, which involve very broad scenarios, embracing the themes of security, the economy and environmental policies. This morning at the Social Theatre in Trento, Romano Prodi, former President of the European Commission and now professor at the University of Bologna, and Stefano Sannino, Secretary General of the European External Action Service of the European Commission, spoke about it, moderated by Paolo Magri, Executive Vice President of ISPI-Istituto per gli studi di politica internazionale and Liliana Faccioli Pintozzi, Foreign Editor of 'Sky TG24'.
For Prodi, it is likely that the next electoral term will not radically change the scenarios. Future bets include enlargement to the former Yugoslavia, in particular Serbia, and Albania, while the situation in countries such as Ukraine and Georgia appears more complex, where, as Sannino recalled, the 'internal factor', more or less conditioned by international order, also counts. Among the other unknowns are the outcome of the American elections, whether victory will be assigned by the American electorate to Trump, and relations with China.

Globalisation, new shared rules are needed

Globalisation means global production chains and interrupting these chains means blocking production flows from one part of the world to another, resulting in lower growth and higher inflation. So said Giovanni Tria, of the University of Rome Tor Vergata, at the meeting 'Why globalisation is not over', held at the Palazzo della Regione and moderated by journalist Rita Fatiguso of Il Sole 24 Ore.
Globalisation,' Tria explained, 'has given us three decades of growth without inflation. Growth from which advanced, emerging and developing countries have benefited, but it is the policies of individual countries that must then manage internal redistribution, which has not always happened. Then there is a problem of balance between countries that are interdependent on each other, and geopolitical tensions generate fear of this dependence. But it is a 'primitive' fear, said Tria, and if one country blocks production, the others suffer as well. Faced with the great and unstoppable shift of economic weight from West to East,' he concluded, 'our task is to govern this phenomenon.

A growing event: 19th Trento Festival of Economics inaugurated

Talking about the dilemmas of our time means providing the broadest possible insight into the most topical issues for the present and future. From schools to artificial intelligence, from transport to economic growth, up to ongoing wars and humanitarian dramas, without forgetting the energy transition, Europe, space, and the many fault lines of geopolitics. But the opening event of the 19th Trento Festival of Economics, moderated by Sole 24 Ore journalists Marta Cagnola and Rosalba Reggio, opens with the words of Pope Francis. A very special 'out of the bag' for the Festival audience as Sole 24 Ore's editor Fabio Tamburini defines it when reading it on stage: 'I am happy to be able to reach you with a message on the occasion of the 19th edition of the Trento Festival of Economics, during which you will be called to question yourselves on some issues that are particularly dear to me, which require a common and responsible reflection by all those who care about the future of humanity'. Thus Bergoglio's message that opens the event enriched by the dialogue between Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, President Emeritus of the Pontifical Council for Culture (who bid farewell to the event) and Lavinia Biagiotti Cigna, entrepreneur and fashion designer, President and CEO of Biagiotti Group.

Levico, large landslide threatens a road: 12 families isolated

Twelve families living in two clusters of houses in the Valdrana locality in the municipality of Levico Terme are isolated, due to a landslide that could affect the access road. This was announced by the Civil Protection, Forestry and Fauna Department of the Province, at the end of an inspection carried out this afternoon by the volunteer fire brigade, the Geological Service and the Municipality of Levico along the channel of the detachment - about 200 metres long - that has also moved some large boulders (one of which reaches 100 cubic metres). Fortunately, the houses are not threatened by possible new collapses. The provincial technicians believe it is necessary to break up the blocks and thus create a valley at the boundary between the forest and the fields, upstream from the access road to the building in the area between Selva and Campiello. The mayor proposed to the residents to temporarily move to some accommodation provided by the municipal administration or, alternatively, to remain in their homes, with the possibility of moving only on foot along the paths that do not overlook the possible area affected by the phenomenon.

Prevention and culture, combating violence against women

After so many news events, in particular the feminicide of Giulia Cecchettin, which also changed the narrative of this phenomenon, the attention is very high and the extremely important topic is on the agenda and must be analysed from different points of view. At the Trento Festival of Economics, this was done by the lawyer and vice-president of D.i.Re Donne in rete contro la violenza Elena Biaggioni, the prefect of Padua Francesco Messina and the district prosecutor at the Trento Court Sandro Raimondi, guided by the questions of Chiara Di Cristofaro, psychologist, writer and Radiocor journalist.
We start from the data: about one third of homicides concern women and almost all of these occur in the emotional family environment, mostly at the hands of the partner or the ex. There is also a steady increase in sexual violence against women over the past 10 years. As the moderator of the event recalled, the Italian legislative system is one of the most advanced in Europe, yet the situation does not change, women continue to suffer violence. This was the starting point for the participants in the debate, who brought to attention the importance of working on the educational aspect, on knowledge, on the unhinging of stereotypes, because the inequality between men and women in our society is still very strong, as Biaggioni pointed out.
