    Artificial Intelligence: Big Tech Strategies

"Artificial intelligence is increasingly showing its great potential. In particular, in the field of generative artificial intelligence, there is a huge power of the so-called Big Tech, the big companies that can afford to invest billions and have a computational capacity, a hardware, beyond any possibility compared to a small medium-sized company or research institutes. But there is a flip side of the coin'.
So said Paolo Traverso, Director of Strategic Planning at the Fondazione Bruno Kessler - a pioneer in Italy in artificial intelligence research - during his speech this afternoon at Palazzo Geremia as part of the Trento Festival of Economics.

Change in PA, human capital is the key

In the complex challenge of modernising the public administration, the way forward is to make the most of people. The key to everything is, therefore, human capital. The tracks on which to arrive at a new PA are awareness in grasping the urgency of the changes taking place globally and then knowing how to manage them, digitalisation and artificial intelligence to reduce the distance to citizens, correct personnel management, and recognition of merit.
This is what emerged, in brief, at the event in Palazzo Geremia with the Minister for Public Administration and Gianni Trovati, journalist for Il Sole 24 Ore, on the subject of change in the PA.

Innovation Days, growing for winning competitiveness

This morning at the Trento Festival of Economics, the economy and growth of Trentino SMEs and the region's start-ups were discussed as part of 'Innovation Days', the Sole 24 Ore roadshow focusing on growth, exports and innovation, organised in collaboration with the Young Entrepreneurs of Confindustria, which this morning brought together local institutional decision-makers, entrepreneurs, professionals and academics to discuss crucial issues for the economic development of Trentino-Alto Adige.
"Trentino was and remains a land of choice for innovation," underlined Fausto Manzana, President of Confindustria Trento and Chairman of Confindustria Trentino-Alto Adige. "Today, however, more must and can be done to finalise the relationship between research and business, increasing investment and attracting new talent. We can legitimately pursue the goal of being a reference point in Europe for artificial intelligence, the space economy, life sciences and technologies for sustainability and the circular economy. We believe that we can and must commit ourselves to the path of continuous innovation. Trentino is a complex territory, in some respects marginal; in the peripheral valleys tourism is our main resource, but maintaining the community can only happen through innovation. The difference can only be made by our choices'.
The morning session, which began at 10 a.m. at ITAS FORUM, was opened with an analysis of the Trentino SME market by Banca Ifis.

Investing in skills to combat the depopulation of small municipalities

The imperative when talking about small municipalities is 'cooperate'. This is what emerged at the Festival of Economics panel 'Small municipalities that must grow, policies for the development of territories', which was attended by Aldo Bonomi, founder and research coordinator of the Aaster Consortium, Maurizio Gardini, president of Confcooperative, Alessandra Proto, head of the OECD centre in Trento, and Federico Samaden, president of the Franco Demarchi Foundation. A collaboration, that between territories and municipalities and institutions, which must take place not only in the more developed areas, but also in the marginal ones, and which pays particular attention to the strengthening of the educational offer. Trentino-Alto Adige, with its valley communities, is an example of how cooperation can bring citizens back to the centre, giving them hope and prospects for development.

War, conflicts, Europe: David Petraeus speaks

"Will war remain the instrument of conflict resolution?": a question as heavy as a boulder was put to David Petraeus, General of the United States Army, former commander of American troops in Iraq, in discussion today with Amy Kazmin, Rome correspondent of the 'Financial Times'. Petraeus' response is clear and sharp: NATO must continue to support those who have been attacked and are fighting for their independence, such as Ukraine, and it must also continue to play a deterrent role against those countries that would otherwise feel authorised to use force. With regard to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, however, according to Petraeus, Israel should not only destroy Hamas but also commit itself, as of now, to the reconstruction and securing of the territories that have already been freed from the presence of terrorists, so as to show the civilian population that things can actually get better.

    Geopolitics, Europe is increasingly alone

At the Teatro Sociale, geopolitics and the great challenge between China and the United States regarding technological supremacy were discussed with General Claudio Graziano, president of Fincantieri and Assonave, and Fabio Tamburini, director of Il Sole 24 Ore, moderated by Rai1 journalist Barbara Carfagna.
We are living in a moment where we are talking about deglobalisation, a new division between states and powers, and at the same time, as far as new technologies are concerned, we are facing a new globalisation, that of 'memory and language'. We are passing through a unique phase that also affects all aspects of geopolitical dynamics.

From single banking law to the stop of public debt, the vision of Antonio Patuelli

The president of the Italian Banking Association Antonio Patuelli, interviewed by Laura Serafini, comments on some major financial economic issues, from the impact on banks of the ECB interest rate cut to cross boarder mergers, from the big events of the European elections and in Great Britain to the upcoming renewal of the ABI board, and the future and the use of technology.
"The ECB has stringent rules based on objective criteria, and the achievement of the 2 per cent European inflation rate makes the time ripe for a rate cut. A change that does not frighten us. In fact, market rates, which are those on which mortgages are made, have already fallen since last November, so we have been working for several months as if the decision had already been taken,' Patuelli said.

Publishing and information, the future before the artificial intelligence revolution

Seeking answers to the future scenarios of AI, the Undersecretary of State to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers with responsibility for information and publishing, the CEO of Il Sole 24 Mirja Cartia d'Asero and the Coo of Mediahuis Paul Verwilt at the Trento Festival of Economics. And in the many possible visions - many of which, by their own admission, still have yet to be imagined - the focal point shifts to regulations. Paraphrasing Ayrton Senna in saying that, in order to go fast, you need a safe circuit, according to the undersecretary, in order for the news to 'travel' at its best in today's world, a safeguarded and protected ecosystem is and will be needed. In particular, three essential points must be taken into account: copyright protection, clear identification of what is produced by means of AI, and the criminal aggravation of deepfake.

Investing in justice to support the economy

A slow civil justice system that is incapable of providing quick answers to citizens and businesses can be a brake on the country's economic development. The Minister of Justice, interviewed by Sole 24 Ore journalist Alessandro Galimberti, spoke about this at the Trento Festival of Economics. The minister explained that the priority for the government has always been to invest in civil justice, which often interferes in the lives of citizens and can block investments, especially from abroad. The slowness of civil justice costs us approximately 2 to 2.5 points of GDP.
