
Geology
Knowledge of the geology of our territory and of the processes that determine its evolution is a factor of great importance, which has always been recognised as a priority by the Autonomous Province of Trento administration. Such knowledge is fundamental, first and foremost, for the correct management of the territory, both from an urban, industrial and tourism point of view, and for a rational and balanced exploitation of natural resources. Knowledge of geomorphological and geodynamic processes also represents the basis on which to set the policy of prevention and protection of inhabited areas and infrastructures from the so-called 'hydrogeological risk', on which our administration has invested considerable resources in recent decades.

Provincial Technical Map (CTP)
It is a topography that represents the elements of the territory without changing their size and position, but showing their actual projection. Objects such as buildings and roads are therefore represented with their true shape as seen from above and not with conventional symbols as the scale of reference (1:10,000) is large enough to appreciate this level of detail.

Lidar survey of the territory of the Province of Trento
LIDAR (Light -or Laser - Detection and Ranging) is an 'active' remote sensing technique that allows topographical surveys to be carried out by means of an aerial vehicle on which a laser scanner is installed that acquires data at very high speed and high resolution. This section provides the laser scanning survey and the creation of digital terrain models (DTM) and surface models (DSM) for the entire territory of the Autonomous Province of Trento (PAT).

Geotechnics
Geotechnical investigations aim to gain knowledge of the physical and mechanical parameters of natural soils and
rocks with the aim of creating a model for predicting their behaviour in geotechnical design and land protection. They can be conducted directly at the site concerned (in situ tests) or on
samples taken by mechanical soundings and taken to the laboratory (geotechnical laboratory tests).
Geognostic soundings (and the relative tests carried out on site and in the laboratory) make it possible to analyse the soil in depth in order to know its stratigraphy and assess its geological and geotechnical characteristics.
Since 1993, the Geological Service has been codifying and computerising data from geognostic surveys carried out on behalf of the Autonomous Province of Trento, both on its own behalf and by external companies, and those of private subjects (in the latter case, the data are not to be considered in the public domain, and therefore cannot be divulged).
The Geotechnical Laboratory issues geotechnical test certificates in the field of soil and rock mechanics. It performs analyses for the services of the Autonomous Province of Trento and for professionals, companies and organisations that request them.

Hydrogeology deals with the study of underground aquifers (i.e. geological structures containing exploitable water resources), their recharge circuits and related phenomena such as springs and karst phenomena (caves). Knowledge of underground water circulation makes it possible to protect the quantity and quality of the resource and to promote its sustainable exploitation.
The Water Resources Map covers the whole of Trentino, identifying and protecting springs, wells and surface water for human consumption.

Read moreThe Brenta Dolomites, with their extension of 556.8 km2, represent the most extensive hydrostructure in Trentino. Considering the outcropping geological formations, it can be estimated that about 60% of the territory is affected by deep karst circulation: therefore, the karst aquifers of the Brenta Dolomites would be able to provide a total of 12 m3/s of average annual flow.
The RIASPAT project arose from the need to deepen our knowledge of the chemical and physical characteristics of groundwater bodies, relating them to the lithologies present in their respective catchment areas.

Geosites, or geotopes, are places that bear particularly significant witness to the evolution of the earth's crust or the influence this has had on the development of life and man. They thus include outcrops of rocks, soils, fluids, minerals and fossils or even particular landscape forms and natural phenomena.

The action of protecting the mineralogical, palaeontological, palaeontological, speleological and karstic heritage is also carried out through the establishment of protected areas (in which the collection of minerals and fossils is forbidden except for scientific purposes) in sites considered to be of particular value.

Glaciers are geologically relevant not only because they exert a considerable morphogenetic action still today in some limited areas of Trentino, but also because of the modelling they have operated in the past over much larger areas. In the periglacial environment, where there is no direct action of the glaciers, the geomorphological processes are due to the freeze-thaw action and to a small extent to nivation.
The Geological Service of the Autonomous Province of Trento, in collaboration with the Universities of Padua (Prof. Carton A., Dr. Carturan L., Dr. Zanoner T.), Pavia (Prof. Seppi R.) and Pisa (Prof. Baroni C., Prof. Salvatore M.C.) has mapped the extension of glaciers and glacial deposits related to the Little Ice Age over the entire territory of the Province of Trento.

Read moreOne of the key sites for permafrost monitoring in Trentino is located on the rocky ridge leading from the south-east to the summit of Monte Vioz (3645 m) in the Ortles Cevedale Group. Along the ridge, a few hundred metres downstream from the summit, is the Vioz 'Mantova' hut (3535 m), which is the highest altitude alpine infrastructure in the central-eastern sector of the Alps.
