Salvini, dialogue on the infrastructure of the future for Italy's competitiveness

The high-speed railway, which is also a model for other countries. The bridge over the Strait of Messina, on which work is under way to ensure maximum transparency and protection of the work, with rules that increase controls compared to the regulations already in force. Then there are the 180 billion euro of construction sites and public works planned throughout the country, investments that are also declined in sustainability, for example with the billions of euro dedicated to the redevelopment of water networks in all Italian territories. These are some of the 'Infrastructures of the future', for the development of the country's system, mentioned by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini, guest today at the Teatro Sociale in a dialogue with journalist Maria Latella, as part of the 20th edition of the Trento Festival of Economics. An interview in which the government representative also touched on current institutional and political issues, starting with Trump's tariffs.

Welfare, the role of supplementary health funds

There are over 17 million members of supplementary health funds in Italy. This is now an unavoidable reality, given the progressive ageing of the population and the reduction in public finances.
The issue was at the centre of a discussion, moderated by the general manager of Sanifonds Trentino Alessio Scopa, at the Trento Festival of Economics, attended by Alberto Brambilla president of Itinerari Previdenziali, Stefano Castrignanò director of Osservatorio Italian Welfare, Luca Foresti, impeditor and founder of First Principles and the councillor for health, social policies and cooperation of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Mario Tonina.

Nuclear, Minister Pichetto Fratin: 'Small plants as big as a container'

'The passage of the nuclear bill through Parliament is ripe'. This was announced by the Minister for the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, interviewed by Il Sole 24 Ore journalist Celestina Dominelli on the occasion of the panel 'Guaranteeing energy autonomy' as part of the 20th Trento Festival of Economics. During the meeting - which also saw the participation of Giuseppina Di Foggia, Terna's CEO and managing director - the minister called for "the broadest possible debate on nuclear power, involving public opinion. I am convinced that we are not going to make real power stations: when we talk about the future of nuclear power, we are referring to small reactors, i.e. new-generation plants the size of a container'. Pichetto Fratin reiterated that 'the bill is not enough', but it is also necessary to 'build up expertise, which is already very high in our country, but we need to build up the whole productive range in order to be ready when the tool is there'. On the prospect of nuclear power, Di Foggia said: 'In the short term, the only viable choice to support the objectives of the transition and ensure the containment of energy prices is to accelerate on renewables. For those like Terna who manage the electricity grid, nuclear power is still a good option, as it is a constant and programmable source of generation'. Also in the audience was the President of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti.

La Zanzara also stings Trento: Cruciani and Parenzo light up the Festival of Economics

The Teatro Sociale in Trento was transformed this morning into an arena of provocation and irony, hosting one of the most cult appointments of the Festival of Economics: The Conference of La Zanzara show. On stage, the unmistakable Radio 24 duo, Giuseppe Cruciani and David Parenzo, gave life to a lively and unfiltered encounter, in the name of freedom of thought. The producer and actor Paolo Ruffini was also present to introduce the new tour that will take La Zanzara from 20 July to the main theatres in Italy, as well as the editor of Sole 24 Ore Fabio Tamburini, who accepted the provocative tone of the meeting with spirit.

Prodi and the duty of hope: Europe and the challenge of leadership in a fragmented world

European identity, the crisis of international politics and the new geopolitical challenges, with in-depth focus on the hottest current issues: the war in Ukraine, the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza, the election of the new Pope Leo XIV and the overwhelming return of Donald Trump to the American scene.
A long, articulate reflection that makes no concessions to the responsibilities of any government or country was the one led by Romano Prodi during the meeting 'The Duty of Hope' - inspired by the book of the same title, published by Rizzoli, by the important politician and academic - at the Sala della Filarmonica. The dialogue with Paolo Magri and Liliana Faccioli Pintozzi brought out a European context marked by a lack of common vision, as well as the concrete risk of our continent's irrelevance in the global panorama. Yet there is hope - as a political, historical and moral duty - to rediscover the sense of a collective mission, to rebuild Europe and, from there, to look to the future.

European economic policy in the time of Trump

European economic policy at the time of Trump was discussed this morning at the Vittoria cinema in Trento, hosted by journalist and Sole 24 Ore writer Riccardo Barlaam, Lilia Cavallari, president of the UPB-Parliamentary Budget Office and lecturer at Roma Tre, Marco Fortis, vice-president of the Edison Foundation and of the Scientific Committee of the Confindustria Studies Centre, Nazzarena Franco, CEO of DHL Express Italy, Marcello Messori, lecturer at the European University Institute and Gylfi Zoega, professor of economics at the University of Iceland.
The first 130 days of the Trump presidency have been characterised by an unpredictability unprecedented for America, and consequently also for the rest of the world, generated by a jumble of executive orders, sometimes contradictory, and even more so by media announcements, which have bombarded public opinion with input. The effects on the economy, finance and companies have been very significant: growing uncertainty in international economies, market instability, falling exports to the US. As always, however, crises trigger opportunities. The American turnaround must push Europe to reinforce its strengths, starting with its social model and its large single market, while at the same time correcting the significant gap it had even before the start of the Trump season on the frontiers of technology and innovation. All this without giving in to the temptation of bilateralism, but continuing to try to operate in a unified manner, as a system. As for Italy, although judgements are varied, it is still the country with the most diversified manufacturing sector in the world and has shown significant growth and employment rates even in the presence of a significant demographic decline and a productivity that is not growing.
The unknown is in the long run. If the population does not grow, nor does productivity, it is difficult to imagine lasting development. Even Italian employment today grows mainly in low productivity sectors, which partly explains the insufficient level of wages and salaries. Investing in high-productivity sectors, however, does not only mean focusing on defence: the transport system and railway networks, for example, can also open up interesting prospects.

Carlo Amleto, a comedian between nonsense songs and a biting news show

An hour of laughter was the one that starred Carlo Amleto this evening in a sold-out Filarmonica for the Fuori Festival event in the Festival dell'Economia programme. The Sicilian comedian was able to involve the audience with his jokes and contagious physicality, even in his ability to make the audience get up from their chairs several times to make them dance to the rhythm of improbable songs. Having recently become a member of the Gialappa Show team, Carlo Amleto has made a name for himself thanks to his participation in programmes such as Bar Stella and Zelig, but above all on the wave of the incredible success of his Tg0, in which he punishes both politicians of all parties and the world of information, which has totalled millions of clicks and views on the web.

Uto Ughi enchants Trento: a symphony to celebrate 160 years of Il Sole 24 Ore

A violin that moves, an orchestra that accompanies, an illuminated stage in the heart of Trento. This evening, the Auditorium Santa Chiara hosted one of the most intense moments of the Fuori Festival programme: the concert 'Economia in Musica: il viaggio sonoro di Uto Ughi' (Economy in Music: Uto Ughi's sound journey), realised to celebrate two important anniversaries, the 160th anniversary of Il Sole 24 Ore and the 20th anniversary of the Trento Festival of Economics.
The event, realised in collaboration with the Uto Ughi Foundation, aimed to bring classical music to a wide and transversal audience, also through a morning preview addressed to students: a moment of listening and education, where music becomes an instrument of education and discovery. The evening had a special introduction with the presentation of the 'Opinion Reader' campaign, designed to tell the story of the bond between Il Sole 24 Ore and its community of readers. On stage, the eight reader protagonists were unveiled, chosen from hundreds of candidates who responded to the call to action launched by the newspaper in February.

The hour of truth: the Middle East

As part of the 20th edition of the Festival, the cycle of geopolitics panels 'The Hour of Truth' continues. After the first meetings on Europe and Trump, today it is time to take stock of the Middle East. A context that has never been so much the focus of international attention as it is today, between the horror that is unfolding in Gaza and new balances that are emerging also as a result of the Trump administration's policies. Paolo Magri, president of ISPI, Valeria Talbot, head of ISPI's Middle East and North Africa Observatory, and Pejman Abdolmohammadi, professor of International Relations in the Middle East at the University of Trento, spoke about it in the Philharmonic Hall.

Why the current model of artificial intelligence development may not be sustainable

Artificial intelligence, and in particular generative intelligence, can bring many improvements to our lives. But it can also have a negative impact, especially on certain sections of the population. The implications, both positive and negative, of the new technology were addressed in the meeting 'Why the current model of artificial intelligence development may not be sustainable', moderated this afternoon by Vittorio Carlini, journalist for Il Sole 24 Ore, at the Teatro Sociale as part of the Trento Festival of Economics programme.
