Social economy at the centre of the Trento Festival of Economics

The social economy asserts itself as an engine of fair and sustainable development, finding full recognition in the context of the Trento Festival of Economics. The panel "Social Economy, because profit is not enough" brought together authoritative voices from institutions, research and the cooperative world to address one of the most strategic themes for the future of Europe.
Opening the discussion was Lucia Albano, undersecretary at the Ministry of Economy and Finance, who reiterated how the social economy is now a pillar of European strategy: 'After the EU Recommendation, Italy is called upon to define an Action Plan. The Ministry is working on a dedicated working group, involving all stakeholders, to define a method of comparison and build a Plan that will be ready by November 2025. Our country is at the forefront, but we need innovative financial instruments, bureaucratic simplifications and advantageous tax measures to fully recognise the value of these realities."

The decline of fertility in Italy and the world: the lesson of the 2000 Nobel Prize for Economics James J. Heckman

The 2000 Nobel Prize winner for Economics James J. Heckman, professor and director of the Center for the Economics of Human Development at the University of Chicago, spoke today at the Palazzo della Regione in Trento on the last day of the 20th edition of the Trento Festival of Economics, on the theme "The decline of fertility in Italy and the world". With him on stage was Maria Latella, journalist for Sole 24 Ore and presenter of programmes for Rai and Radio24.
Heckman started from Malthus, to outline a historical fresco of humanity growing until the end of the 19th century. In the current phase, however, almost everywhere the population is declining, except in Africa and some Latin American countries. The country with the lowest birth rate is South Korea, but even in China the imbalance has become marked: there are more and more old people and fewer and fewer young people. One of the countries with more young people, on the other hand, is Chad. The decline in fertility today affects the most developed countries, so Malthus' thesis that fertility was conditioned by the availability of food is no longer valid. The most important factors are therefore others. Of a social nature, for example, the main one seems to be the greater autonomy of women, who today have more opportunities, more decision-making power, more say. Another important aspect is the fact that the age of first birth is being postponed more and more, due to the fact that more time is spent on education and entry into the world of work.

Energy communities: the transition starts with citizen awareness

Can a small mountain renewable energy community (CER) show the way to a more equitable, participatory and conscious energy transition? At the centre of the panel 'Sociology, energy communities and transition', experts in energy, economics and sociology compared data, models and visions for a sustainable energy future, which has not only an environmental but also a social impact.
From the virtuous case of Storo to the role of infrastructures, from the concept of prosumer to the issue of inequalities, the need to combine environment, community and development emerged. But clear rules, conscious participation, and political, regulatory, and administrative management capable of giving citizens an active role in the transition are needed.

Astronaut Parmitano between climate change, satellite communication and the future of space exploration

"The future of space exploration? There is now a very strong interest, political and otherwise, in going back to the Moon, exploring parts we haven't seen yet, to find water. And then there is Mars: covered by Martian sand are large amounts of ice; there you can find traces of what was once life. This is a robotic exploration that has never been done before'. The astronaut and military man Luca Parmitano, pressed by Corriere del Trentino columnist Enrico Franco, thus closed his speech at the Teatro Sociale during the 20th edition of the Festival dell'Economia. A panel that began by talking about climate change as seen and monitored from space, with a warning: it is urgent to limit the damage, we are already late. And as for the European satellite internet, the Iris2 network will arrive in 2030.

Easy times, big problems: Tremonti and the uneasy future of Europe

At the Trento Festival of Economics, the meeting staged this morning at the Cinema Vittoria had the flavour of warning and provocation. On stage, Giulio Tremonti, former Minister of the Economy and now President of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, and Peter Gomez, editor of Il Fatto Quotidiano, confronted each other. The title chosen for the event, 'Easy times create weak men and big problems, difficult times create strong men and easy times', anticipated the deep and meditative tone of the dialogue. Between lucid analyses and close exchanges, the dialogue between Tremonti and Gomez highlighted the fractures of our time: the crisis of democracy, the weakness of elites and the return of old threats. A frank confrontation, devoid of easy answers, but capable of posing the essential questions in an era that urgently needs them.

The global industrial situation and cooperation between the US, China and Europe

The global industrial situation and cooperation between the US, China and Europe was the topic at the centre of the panel held this morning in Sala Depero, in the Palazzo della Provincia di Trento, hosted by Stefania Di Bartolomeo, CEO of Physis Investment, Zhiyi He, expert of the Institute of Global Industry of Tsinghua University and professor at Peking University, Paolo Lazzarini, Chief Strategy & Business Development Officer of Amplifon, Roberta Miraglia, head of the Economy and International Politics editorial staff of Il Sole 24 Ore and Lorenzo Stanca, one of the founders of Mindful Capital.
The starting point is Professor Hu's annual snapshot of the world's leading companies, some 48,000 in number, according to which the strongest players are confirmed in the order of the USA, China and Europe (taken as a whole, even if examined state by state). So far, the economies of the major producing countries have grown in parallel with the growth of open markets, and this has become even more pronounced since China's entry into the WTO in the early 2000s, although with the arrival of Xi Jinping the emphasis on openness has cooled somewhat. The US, by virtue of the dollar, its currency of choice, has always met an important share of the domestic market with imports, while maintaining a leading position in services and ceding important shares of public debt to external savers. Trump's new policies have a dramatic impact on this scenario (the word 'obscurantism' resounded in the room) and are a harbinger of recession. However, the new situation could increase trade between Europe and other areas of the world, China itself, but also the rest of South East Asia or sub-Saharan Africa.
