Description
Smaller elements within the area in question are of anthropic origin: this is the typical case of the two ponds known as 'della Vela', which were established in the depressions by rather recent and now abandoned gravel pits.
The small ponds host a varied flora and a very rich fauna: fish, amphibians such as the green frog (Rana 'esculenta'), the alpine newt (Triturus alpestris) and the tree frog (Hila sp. ); reptiles such as the water snakes Natrix natrix and Natrix tessellata; also numerous species of small aquatic invertebrates.
The rocky walls of Sorasass, by virtue of their verticality, do not host any type of vegetation except in the ledge areas.
On the other hand, from a faunistic point of view, these rock faces present peculiar aspects linked to the refuge they offer to many species of birds of prey, both diurnal and nocturnal: golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), buzzard (Buteo buteo), honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus), kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) and black kite (Milvus migrans) among the diurnal ones, and tawny owl (Asio otus) and tawny owl (Strix aluco) among the nocturnal ones.
The wooded slopes at the base of the Sorasass are ascribable to the Orno-ostrieto association and denote a remarkable floristic richness; among the species worth mentioning are Phyllitis scolopendrium, Taxus baccata, Euphrasia tricuspidata and Campanula marchesetti.
Finally, the two ponds mentioned, which are currently the only marshy elements in the plain surrounding the city of Trento, denote a considerable wealth of microfauna.
