Protected areas

This section lists the protected areas of the provincial territory. These are land, river or lake areas that are home to one or more naturalistically important species of fauna and flora, or have one or more ecosystems that are important for biological biodiversity or for the conservation of genetic resources.

I Nature Parks and the Networks of Reserves are not included in this list, please refer to the specific in-depth sections.

Depending on the value of the nature elements present, nature reserves have different, sometimes overlapping classifications:

• Provincial nature reservesTerritory designated specifically for the conservation of one or more important species or ecosystems; protection is established by resolution of the Provincial Council
• Non-established biotopes: areas formally identified by the 1987 Provincial Urban Plan as worthy of protection but not then formally established by resolution of the Provincial Council
• Local reserves: territories of limited extension of municipal interest
• ZPS - Special Protection Areas: protection areas part of the Natura 2000 European Network, established by the Birds Directive to protect the territories most suitable for the survival of wild birds, including migratory birds.
• SAC - Special Areas of Conservation: protection areas part of the Natura 2000 European Network, established by the Habitats Directive, to ensure the long-term maintenance of natural habitats and species
• SCI - Site of Community Importance: first stage in the designation of a SAC
