Peace, freedom, democracy: the recipe of Nobel laureate Tawakkol Karman

Tawakkol Karman, Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2011 for his non-violent struggle for democracy and the defence of human rights in Yemen, introduced by Radio 24's Laura Bettini, explained how freedom and democracy are necessary conditions for a peaceful resolution of conflicts and the maintenance of a peaceful order.
"Unfortunately," he said, "there is sometimes the mistaken idea that freedom and democracy lead to instability, while authoritarian regimes can guarantee peace. It is exactly the opposite. But there are real, true democracies and 'fake' democracies. Democracies usually try to resolve conflicts through dialogue or mediation. At the same time, people in a democratic regime can express their ideas and needs peacefully'. In short, a healthy democracy rests on the rule of law, which protects it from both extremism and authoritarian turns and allows for a peaceful transition of power.
When people's rights are denied, on the contrary, it pushes them towards radicalism and violent conflict. The same happens in international relations.

Nobel laureate Shiller: 'Narratives are one of the forces driving the economy'

Economist and 2013 Nobel Prize winner Robert Shiller spoke today via video link-up at the Trento Festival of Economics to discuss how emotions and fears influence investments.
"Human behaviour has always been strongly conditioned by emotions or by narratives, by stories told by other people, about certain issues": the economist's words. Technological progress has always played an important role in this phenomenon, and today, with new technologies, narratives, whether true or false, manage to go viral and have an enormous impact on our lives, society and the markets, effectively determining their course. At the same time, however, new technologies are shaping a new scenario that we will only be able to appreciate many years from now: if we are not afraid of them and do not make them a negative narrative or a threat to our status, they will be our main allies for the future,' said Shiller.

Marcegaglia: 'US aid to companies? A serious plan but Europe is discriminated against'

There were many young people in the audience in Depero Hall to attend the double panel on US state aid to business. A complex plan that amounts to a figure ranging from 370 billion dollars to a trillion dollars. Questioned by Radio24 deputy executive director Sebastiano Barisoni, Emma Marcegaglia, president and CEO of Marcegaglia Holding and, in the past, president of Confindustria and Eni, said: 'It is an effective, pragmatic, serious Plan. But it discriminates against Europe since subsidies are given to companies that produce locally, in the United States'. He replied in the second panel, led by Maristella Vicini, ceo of Isea, Daniel S. Hamilton, former US deputy secretary for European affairs: 'The Plan is an example of seriousness. It is about rebates and tax credits'.
