Europe is on the threshold of the next electoral deadline. The reasons for abstentionism, but also why it is not convenient not to vote, were discussed this afternoon in the Depero Room of the Autonomous Province of Trento, together with Jaume Duch, Director General of DG Communication of the European Parliament, Lorenzo Ferrari, Editorial Coordinator of Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso-Transeuropa and Luciana Maruta, journalist, currently at the digital publication Divergente, coordinated by Michela Finizio, Journalist of 'Il Sole 24 Ore'. A wide-ranging survey carried out across Europe by these subjects, starting with Divergente, analysed the reasons for non-voting, revealing certain trends. The future of European democracy would seem to be primarily linked to the well-being of the population. The countries or regions with more abstentionism are in fact those with more elderly people, higher illiteracy rates and above all lower incomes. The reasons for non-voting, however, would be more related to a general disillusionment with politics, rather than with Europe in the strict sense. But there are also reasons to be optimistic. In fact, the participation rate in the European elections is steadily increasing: in 2014, 42% of voters voted. in 2019, 51%. In the next election, polls suggest participation could approach 60%.
