Study visit to a crayfish farm

Our experts visited the ERSAF centre in Tignale, in the Alto Garda Bresciano Park, dedicated to the reproduction and breeding of crayfish, with a view to their reintroduction into the wild.
A similar centre is planned in Trentino as part of the NatConnect2030 project.

Description

One of the objectives of the Trentino Crayfish Management Plan for the next few years is to open a breeding and rearing centre for crayfish, which will then be released in watercourses suitable for their survival, so as to have a valid support tool for local crayfish populations.

ERSAF, the Ente Regionale per i Servizi all'Agricoltura e alle Foreste of the Lombardy region, has been operating two crayfish breeding and rearing centres for several years now. The centres were started and expanded as part of the LIFE CRAINat project.

These sites are of fundamental importance for the effective implementation of reintroduction activities: adult breeding individuals are placed there for mating to produce young individuals. Selected individuals (autochthonous strains whose donor populations are known) can thus be bred in perfect health conditions.
