Description
Climate change is accelerating the melting of glaciers around the world, which are becoming thinner and more fragile. The tragic collapse in Marmolada is a sign of their rapid evolution towards new equilibria with the current climate, and is a 'sentinel' of possible wider scenarios in the Alpine context.
The Cabina di regia delle aree protette e dei ghiacciai (steering committee for protected areas and glaciers ) has for some time now been carrying out a survey of the study, monitoring and research initiatives on glaciers and periglacial areas in Trentino developed by the various competent bodies(here is a collection of studies, scientific publications and press articles). At the same time, the need to ensure effective dissemination of the accumulated knowledge also emerged, towards local authorities and all citizens.
It is from this consideration that the Glacier Days were born, a series of events organised by the network of parks in the provincial territory in collaboration with MUSE - Museo della Scienza. The initiatives, articulated in in-depth meetings and guided outings in the territory, represent a valuable opportunity to periodically address the various themes related to glaciers and high altitude alpine environments, starting from their vulnerability, but also deepening the geomorphological aspects and those related to their history, to the "memory" that they leave to the communities.
An initial restitution of the activities of the provincial scientific bodies on snow, glaciers and permafrost was conducted by the Appa - Provincial Environmental Protection Agency, through the Provincial Coordination and Action Table on Climate Change, at the workshop held on 14 March.
The Glacier Days start on 13 September 2022 in Peio, in the Trentino headquarters of the Stelvio National Park. The work will address the topics of environmental changes of glaciers and permafrost and their monitoring.
