Description
This is a now rare example of a valley floor wetland that has survived past reclamation.
The reserve consists mainly of alder formations (Alnus incana and Alnus glutinosa). Included in the biotope is the northernmost edge of Lake Levico, whose shore is characterised by the presence of interesting aquatic vegetation.
The central portion of the biotope, consisting of a vast black alder grove, is home to valuable cores of Salix pentandra.
There is also a large area of reed thicket consisting of marsh reed (Phragmites australis) and there are stands of Matteuccia struthiopteris, a rare fern with which Impatiens noli-tangere and Cardaminopsis halleri are associated.
The fauna has not yet been studied in depth, however, it is worth mentioning the interesting presence of the salamander (Salamandra salamandra), which breeds in the streams that run through the wetland, and the frequentation of the portion of Lake Levico included in the protected area by the great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus) and the coot (Fulica atra).
