Provincial nature reserve - Biotope not established
The biotope is a beautiful stepped peat bog, the origin of which is linked to the presence of a large water reservoir in the substrate.
This peat bog is characteristic, and in some respects even unique: it is home to species that can be described as 'relicts' of a past colder flora and fauna, now relegated to much more northern latitudes.
The biotope is included in the territory of the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Nature Park.
The peat bog hosts a complex vegetation consisting of sphagnum pads on which many rare species of boreal and circumpolar character grow. These include Andromeda polifolia, Carex pauciflora, Vaccinium microcarpum and Betula pubescens.
The insects that populate the biotope also include very rare species not found in other Italian localities. These are again northern species, such as Agabus melanarius and Ilybius aenescens.
