Description
The wetland belongs, via the Rio Nero, to the catchment area of the Ega River, which drains into the Province of Bolzano.
The peat mats act as reservoirs of water that is released little by little, thus assuming the valuable function of real water flywheels.
Among the numerous plant species identified within the biotope, more than 200, Drosera intermedia, Oxycoccus micropetalum, Carex dioica, Vaccinum uliginosum, Dactylorhiza majalis, Trichophorum alpinum are worthy of mention due to their rarity or biogeographical interest, Viola palustris, Equisetum hyemale, Pinguicula vulgaris, Primula farinosa, Eriophorum vaginatum, Scorzonera humilis, Carex pauciflora, Carex tumidicarpa, Carex capillaris, Equisetum variegatum, Pulsatilla vernalis, all species associated with wetlands.
The fauna of the biotope is rich in species. Among the Mammals, the presence of the deer, roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and red deer (Cervus elaphus), and the interesting alpine hare (Lepus timidus) stands out.
Reptiles are represented by the viviparous lizard (Lacerta vivipara) and the grass snake (Vipera berus), amphibians by the alpine newt (Triturus alpestris), the common toad (Bufo bufo) and the mountain frog (Rana temporaria).
The most numerous group of Vertebrates, however, is represented by Birds, with no less than 34 species surveyed during the breeding season, some of which are of high fauna value: birds of prey such as the goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) and the kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) and Tetraonidae such as the capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus).
