Description

The small lakes rise respectively at metres 1909 the smaller and 1922 the southern, a short distance from the Colbricon Refuge. These pools are surrounded by dwarf shrubs, rhododendrons and junipers. From here, the Colbricon peak can be seen opposite, an area that was the theatre of war between the Italians and Austrians between 1915 and 1918.

Recent geomorphological investigations have made it possible to interpret the genesis of the lakes as due to structural tectonic processes, overturning previous hypotheses that saw them as lakes of glacial origin.

The Colbricon Lakes are also an interesting area from an archaeological point of view. Important finds dating back to the Mesolithic period were found on the shores of the lakes, indicating a settlement of hunters who worked flint to produce various objects for hunting and everyday use.
