An episode of predation by a pack of wolves occurred today at malga Lavacchio, on the Baldo massif in the municipality of Avio, where six adult grazing cattle were injured and are currently being treated by the farm veterinarian. The Trentino Forestry Corps is investigating what happened. This is a different herd from the one that grazes in the Trentino Lessinia, and it must be said that, in the case of adult cattle, there are no prevention measures. The Administration emphasises that the possibility of removing problematic or harmful specimens is a fundamental element in the management of the species in the territory, as is the case in the rest of the Alps. A measure in respect of which, in the case of malga Boldera, the Council of State intervened, ordering the suspension of the decree of the President of the Province that provided for the removal of a second specimen, after the one felled by the Trentino Forestry Corps on 20 September last. The Fauna Service is now drawing up a new wolf management plan, in the light of the new European regulatory framework that provides for a reduced degree of protection for the species compared to the past.
