In one of the places where one of the darkest pages of human history was written, the President of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti, paid homage to the 44 Trentino citizens interned, 38 of whom died in the Mauthausen concentration camp. Among them were the mountain guide Adamello Collini, who helped hundreds of people find refuge in Switzerland during the war, and the priest Don Narciso Sordo, a protagonist of the resistance in Tesino and Bolzano against the Nazi-Fascists. Only six returned home after the liberation.
The president paid his respects at the monument dedicated to all the fallen in the camp and then laid a wreath at the memorial for the victims of the Holocaust next to the recently restored plaque of the Autonomous Province of Trento. 'On the day after 25 April, we believe it is important to be here during our visit to Austria,' said Fugatti, 'because we feel it is right to remember those who lost their lives for the ideal of freedom.
