Socially responsible corporate choices: the role of shareholders and consumers

TRENTO ECONOMY FESTIVAL - In recent decades, companies have realised that their survival and achievement of success in the markets also require the fulfilment of social and environmental commitments. Those who choose this path have a better chance of making their voice heard against unresponsible companies, if they make critical mass with other small shareholders and consumers and prefer specialised investment funds aligned in favour of social responsibility. Economist Eleonora Broccardo, from the University of Trento together with economist Luigi Zingales and Oliver Hart, 2016 Nobel Prize winner in economics and professor at Harvard, in Trento for the Squirrel Kermesse, presented a study published in the prestigious Journal of Political Economy, which highlights how stakeholder behaviour can influence the socially responsible choices of companies. Sarah Varetto, Sky's Head of Sustainability and Communications (former director of SkyTg24), led the dialogue.

In fifty years 12 million fewer Italians

TRENTO ECONOMY FESTIVAL - We are the second oldest country in the world, we live longer and even better, but there is no generational turnover with a fertility rate so low as to arrive (and not as of today) at an average of 1.5 children per woman. In this situation we enter a demographic trap that jeopardises current levels of welfare and well-being. A significant fact is ISTAT's forecast for 2070: there will be 47 million Italians, 12 million less than the current figure. And not even migratory movements will be able to close this gap. What does Italy need? A real policy to support the family and a new model for welcoming and integrating immigrants within an overall design on the sustainability of social models.

Innovation between economics and politics: the quantum world of Armen Sarkissian

FESTIVAL ECONOMY TRENTO - "We are experiencing radical changes: there have been excellent technological advances and we are living at the crossroads of an era that is rapidly changing the world, which is no longer based on the clear-cut opposition between East and West, but on more complex, non-bloc alignments; we are entering a new world, the quantum world": Armen Sarkissian, former president of the Republic of Armenia, with a long diplomatic career, defines the current situation with an approach linked to his training as a professor of theoretical physics. An overview that analyses the role of politics and technology, with the experience of a country that has focused on innovation, the scientific and technical training of new generations and investment in artificial intelligence.
Moderator of the event at the Auditorium, which saw Sarkissian remotely connected, was Barbara Carfagna, journalist for Radio1 Rai and lecturer in Sociology at the Sapienza University of Rome, together with guest speaker Juan Carlos De Martin, lecturer at the Turin Polytechnic.

The digital revolution and its effects on the world of work

TRENTO ECONOMY FESTIVAL - The labour market is increasingly being called upon to deal with the swirling scenario of changes created by the digital economy. This is one of the reasons why we can speak of a true digital revolution that redesigns the parameters linked to the various professions and requires continuous updating for those in the world of work. It is an unstoppable process, which while on the one hand creates great opportunities and new professions, on the other generates insecurity and anxiety, affecting the middle classes in particular. The world of politics in Italy too is called upon to respond to this revolution in order to avoid growing social tensions. This was discussed in the two-step meeting proposed in the morning for the Festival, in the Aula Kessler of the Faculty of Sociology and conducted by Giorgio Pogliotti, journalist for il Sole 24 Ore.

Where the world economy and politics are heading, Cold War risk and the role of Europe

TRENTO ECONOMY FESTIVAL - Massimo D'Alema, president of the Fondazione Italiani Europei, Prime Minister at the end of the 1990s, Foreign Minister with Romano Prodi in government, and former president of Copasir, at 360 degrees at the Festival on the geopolitical and economic world situation. For D'Alema, the integration of the world economy is an irreversible fact, but there is also a new world order making its way, based on the US-China polarisation. The war in Ukraine and the decline of Russia and Europe favour both the Asian giant and the star and stripes superpower.

The war of talent for innovation

TRENTO ECONOMY FESTIVAL - Companies must equip themselves and orient themselves in the supply market with the available technological tools and be proactive in order to find the right people in a system where professions evolve and the functions required are increasingly specialised. Openness to mobility, strong relationships with universities and institutions offering master's degrees and educational pathways, and the integration of people from other countries can be useful strategies to get out of one's comfort zone and find trustworthy collaborators. Discussing new technologies, fintech start-ups and artificial intelligence were Massimo Bergami, Managing Director of the Bologna Business School, University of Bologna; Roberto Nicastro, President of Banca AideXa; Monia Ferrari, Financial Services Director Capgemini Italia; and Fiorenzo Bellelli, CEO Warrant Hub, TINEXTA.

The impact of sustainability on finance and markets

TRENTO ECONOMY FESTIVAL - Citizens and businesses are developing a growing awareness of sustainability. Sustainability means implementing a development model capable of ensuring that the needs of the present generation are met, without compromising the ability of future generations to realise their own. Nice words - on paper - but sustainability is a long road full of obstacles. Green washing is one of them: beware of those who try to build a deceptively positive self-image in terms of environmental impact. "There is a need for a radical change in the way of being of citizens and businesses, which passes through culture, education and empowerment," said former magistrate Livia Pomodoro.

Zelig, the thousand faces of Italian comedy in the show at the Festival of Economics

TRENTO ECONOMY FESTIVAL - For almost forty years, Milan's Zelig has been one of the nerve centres of Italian cabaret. A legendary hothouse of comedians that since the 1990s has also found an important and unique television showcase capable of propelling many artists towards success. A true phenomenon, the Zelig one, which materialised Saturday evening on the stage of the S. Chiara Auditorium for the Festival of Economics. A show that saw some of the comedians who have emerged from the theatre and small screen take turns on stage. Grand master of ceremonies for the show was Raul Cremona, always in the role of an unlikely magician illusionist in eternal competition with the legendary magician Silvan.
