   Marmolada, search operations at altitude underway

   In the area downstream from the detachment of the Punta Rocca serac, on the Marmolada, search operations are underway from the ground, in close liaison with the Canazei Civil Protection Centre, with volunteer fire brigades and Psychologists for the Peoples. There are 14 men and women from Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico Trentino, Soccorso Alpino della Guardia di Finanza with two canine units, the Centro Addestramento Alpino di Moena of the Polizia di Stato, Trento's permanent fire brigade and the Carabinieri's Alpine Rescue Team. Operations began at 6.15 am and will be concluded as long as the weather conditions allow. The stability of the ice is being monitored live by experts from the Centre for Civil Protection of the University of Florence, who are collaborating with the Forecast and Planning Office of the Autonomous Province of Trento, through data collected by interferometric and Doppler radar.

   The Natura 2000 network in Trentino

   In Trentino the Natura 2000 network has been implemented by identifying 136 Sites of Community Interest (SCI), 19 Special Protection Areas (SPAs), 54 habitats of which 12 are priority.
   The more than 150 "nodes" of the Natura 2000 Network cover 28% of the provincial territory and, together with the Parks and Local Reserves, describe its naturalistic uniqueness.

    How the idea of the Natura 2000 Network was born

    Since the 1980s, the concept of biodiversity and the problem of its progressive erosion have become the subject of numerous international conventions.
    In 1992, with the signing of the Rio Convention on Biodiversity, the member states of the European Community adopted the objective of 'anticipating, preventing and attacking at source the causes of significant reduction or loss of biological diversity in view of its intrinsic value and its ecological, genetic, social, economic, scientific, educational, cultural, recreational and aesthetic values'.

    Natura 2000: objectives and tools of an innovative approach

    The main objective of Natura 2000 is to safeguard biodiversity by maintaining natural resources (natural and semi-natural habitats as well as wild flora and fauna) in a state of 'satisfactory conservation'.
    Biodiversity contributes to sustainable development and must be promoted and maintained while taking into account social and cultural economic needs and regional and local particularities.

    Acts of vandalism against the 'Blessing Christ' mosaic in Susà, Bisesti: 'An offence to the whole community'

    "When one learns that a work of art is defaced by unscrupulous vandals, it is always a deep sorrow for those who recognise its value, it is an offence not only to the work itself, but to the entire community. Now the mosaic will first have to be cleaned of the graffiti, but the Province has a clear objective to enhance it as it deserves. The Superintendency's experts have carried out an inspection and assessed that the entire detachment operation can be carried out: the conditions and resources are in place to move the work; a specialised company capable of doing so has also been identified but, given the size of the monument, it is necessary to find a suitable place to house it and, above all, a location that does not diminish its beauty'. These are the comments of the provincial councillor for culture Mirko Bisesti on the subject of the vandalism that defaced the mosaic of the Blessing Christ preserved at the former Artigianelli di Susà di Pergine.

    Marmolada, 2 new recognitions: total of identified victims rises to 6

    Six victims have been identified by family members, among the nine bodies recovered after the collapse of the serac in Marmolada. Two new identifications were made this morning: they are Czech nationals. There are now 5 people - all of Italian nationality - claimed by family members who are still missing, pending the scientific findings of the Special Investigation Department of the Carabinieri Corps. As of today, there are 7 injured people involved in Sunday's tragic event who are hospitalised: 4 in Trentino and 3 in Veneto. This was announced by the presidents of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti, and the Veneto Region, Luca Zaia, at the end of the coordination meeting held at the Civil Protection centre in Canazei. The relatives of the Czech victims were welcomed in Val di Fassa by the Czech consul in Milan, Jiri Kudela, and by the presidents Fugatti and Zaia, who expressed to them the condolences of the local community.
