The provisional death toll is six (it cannot be ruled out as definitive) following the detachment of the serac from the summit cap of the Marmolada glacier, below Punta Rocca. An avalanche of snow, ice and rock that in its passage of about two kilometres along the Trentino side also involved the route of the normal route, while roped parties were on it. The alarm on the 112 Single Emergency Number arrived at around 1.45 p.m.. The Trentino Civil Defence's rescue services were immediately deployed: six helicopters, Alpine and speleological rescue personnel with canine units, fire brigade, police, Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza also from the nearby provinces of Bolzano, Belluno and Venice were deployed. The operations are coordinated at the Canazei fire station, which is also the headquarters of the mountain rescue service. The president of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti, and the deputy mayor of Canazei, Dimitri Demarchi, are also at the scene.
The injured were taken to hospitals in Trento, Belluno, Bolzano and Treviso: the number will be announced in the next few hours. Rescuers also recovered four people unharmed.
