Description
Awareness of the value of the Natura 2000 Network areas, the protection of which is also regulated according to the interaction between human activities and conservation, the opportunity they represent at territorial level and their maintenance, requires a complex and articulated strategy that cannot disregard the collaboration, consensus and participation of the communities living the territory.
For this reason, the management of Natura 2000 sites, together with any local reserves, in Trentino is entrusted in many territories to the Networks of Reserves.
Developing this strategy was the challenge of the Life+TEN project.
The Natura 2000 network in Trentino consists of:
- 136 Sites of Community Interest (SCI), identified in accordance with the Habitats Directive, 135 of which have subsequently been designated as Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) .
The 'Val Jumela' SCI has not yet completed the process of becoming a SAC. - 19 Special Protection Areas (SPAs) established under the Birds Directive 2009/147/EC on the conservation of wild birds.
Almost all the areas identified as SPAs fall within territories already designated as SPAs (with the exception of a portion of the Lagorai SPA and the Stelvio SPA). - 54 habitats, 12 of which are priority habitats. The habitat is an ecological unit that is more or less autonomous, i.e. capable of sustaining itself and self-regulating, adapting to changes in the environment.
The habitat also constitutes the physical space within which the animal and plant species typical of that habitat live; it constitutes the 'address' where a plant or animal species lives. Thus, to a given habitat correspond only and exclusively certain species, which are typical of that habitat. Different habitats correspond to different species.
