'The 37th anniversary of the Stava tragedy comes at a delicate time that Trentino is experiencing, after what happened on the Marmolada. Although in different ways, these two events have to do with the delicate balance between man and nature. Safety, prevention and respect must therefore continue to be our watchwords. We remember the victims, so that such events do not happen again'.
This was the message of the President of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti, on the sidelines of the commemoration ceremony for the 268 people who lost their lives in Stava on 19 July 1985. It was a simple but solemn institutional appointment, with Holy Mass celebrated by Don Albino dell'Eva, in the presence of Government Commissioner Gianfranco Bernabei, Provincial Council President Walter Kaswalder, several provincial councillors, Tesero Mayor Elena Ceschini and many first citizens of the Fiemme Valley.
The Autonomous Province of Trento participated with conviction and a sense of responsibility in the rich programme of initiatives organised by the Fondazione Stava 1985. Initiatives that respond to the warning that the President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi had expressed about Stava: the need for 'active remembrance'. 'It is not enough to remember and commemorate, but reflection on what happened must determine attitudes, visions, and political choices,' noted President Fugatti.
