The solution to the crisis of the West? Resist, fortify and win

"Today superficiality reigns and a strong push was given first by commercial TV, then by the Internet, with the hopes of democracy of the Net where one can find everything, too much, which is to say nothing; today, instead, it is the age of social media." This is how Fabio Tamburini, Editor-in-Chief of Il Sole 24 Ore and President of the Scientific Committee of the Trento Festival of Economics opened the meeting at Cinema Vittoria on the theme 'This is how the Roman Empire fell', with Francesco Gaetano Caltagirone, President of the Caltagirone Group, and Aldo Cazzullo, Journalist of the Corriere della Sera. Faced with the reigning superficiality, it is necessary, said Tamburini, to understand where we are going, to increase a knowledge that becomes awareness and protagonism. We must learn from the past to understand the future, as we see that the pendulum of history is now swinging from west to east. That is why it is important to understand the reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire.

Nobel Prize winner Edmund Phelps: 'For our economies to flourish, we need to recover values such as creativity and individual expression'

It is a theory that puts man and his creativity at the centre, that of Phelps, to describe the growth of countries. A theory that captivated the young audience that flocked to hear him speak at the Trento Festival of Economics, in its overturning of classical values, in favour rather of dynamism and individual expression. "Governments should take all this into account to cope with the slowdown in economic growth we are experiencing: they should eliminate certain intrusive regulations, favour innovators. Likewise, companies should work towards the elimination of hierarchies, which do not favour the flow of ideas, and economists should also begin to take into account all those economic values that do not have commercial 'weight'.

Closure of the Trentino branch of Laba Brescia: commitment to guarantee the validity of qualifications issued

The vice-president and councillor for education intervened in relation to what appeared in the local press regarding the closure of the unauthorised territorial branch of Laba Brescia - the Free Academy of Fine Arts with its Trentino headquarters in Rovereto - expressing understanding for the discomfort of the students and families who, in choosing their training pathway, had opted for the same academy, and emphasising how a public administrator must as far as it is within its competences and possibilities, also guarantee the correctness and legitimacy of the educational offerings in the province, first and foremost the validity of the formal qualifications issued, so that families are not faced with nasty surprises.
On this specific point, since it is clearly not possible to intervene on the requirements demanded by law for accreditation and on which the Ministry is called upon to express an opinion, the commitment has focused precisely on guaranteeing the validity of the qualifications issued and safeguarding the validity of the training credits and examinations taken by students. And it was only a few days ago that the vice-president, the structures of the provincial department and the Ministry discussed the matter, the outcome of which bodes well for the confirmation of the validity of the credits and qualifications obtained to date, although it reiterates that the conditions do not currently exist for keeping the location active.
The vice-president did not go into the merits of the professionalism and competence of the teachers at the Rovereto site, nor of the quality of the courses offered, but she firmly emphasised the guarantee of protection for the students and their families, for which she is working in the appropriate fora.
The hope, both for the youngsters and for the Trentino territory, is that Laba Brescia will take action as soon as possible to acquire, in compliance with the regulations in force, the authorisations required for the regular conduct of training activities.

Waiting lists, personnel and prevention, the recipe for a health service at the service of citizens

Healthcare was at the centre of the political agenda and of this first day of the Festival: at the end of the morning, the Depero Hall hosted a public discussion between the Minister of Health, a doctor by training, and Marzio Bartoloni, a journalist from Il Sole 24 Ore. In Italy, the situation is complex, patchy, with many lights and many shadows - according to OECD data, we are also the first in some services - but the goal is not the feared privatisation of healthcare, but to strengthen it. Among the priorities are the reduction of waiting lists, the attractiveness of personnel and their enhancement, and prevention.
On the home stretch, a decree-law that intends to structurally address these issues not only to reorganise and rationalise the system, but to provide concrete answers to citizens.
