With 98 specimens (yearlings excluded) estimated in 2023, the growth trend of the bear population in Trentino continues, while the presence of the wolf appears substantially stable compared to 2022, with an estimated 27 packs (for about 150 wolves, plus some solitary specimens).
The data are reported in the Large Carnivores Report 2023, a technical and informative document edited by the Sector of the same name that refers to the Fauna Service of the Autonomous Province of Trento. A document that offers a detailed overview of the management of these animals and that appears particularly significant in the year marked by the tragic death of Andrea Papi, on 5 April 2023. "The safety of our mountain communities is an absolute priority," are the words of the provincial councillor for forests, hunting and fishing, Roberto Failoni, who points out that "the measures adopted, such as the removal of dangerous specimens according to the Pacobace and the implementation of anti-bear bins and prevention works, alongside the distribution of guard dogs, demonstrate our determination to find a balance between conservation and safety. Investment in education and communication is equally crucial to raise awareness and promote sustainable practices".
