NUE 112 – Single European Emergency Number

112 (one-one-two) is the official telephone number for contacting the emergency services within the European Union. It is a single, free service, accessible even without a SIM card or credit, or whilst the phone is locked, to request urgent assistance from the police, the fire service, the emergency medical services or maritime rescue services.

Currently in Italy, the NUE 112 service is operational in 16 regions, with 24 Single Response Centres (CUR) located across the country.

In Trentino, the NUE service has been operational since June 2017. Since then, calls to 112 from across the province have been routed to the CUR in Trento. The centre’s operators, who are specially trained to handle the initial response to calls, are responsible for locating the caller, identifying the nature of the incident and forwarding only genuine emergencies to the local emergency response centres (PSAP2), which are responsible for managing these situations: Fire Service, Trentino Emergenza, Carabinieri, State Police, and Coastguard (with jurisdiction only over Lake Garda).

For the five municipalities of Primiero, the freephone number 800 112 000 was also introduced in 2021. This exception was necessary due to issues relating to telephone network routing. When dialling 112 from that part of Trentino, calls are in fact routed to the Carabinieri in Feltre rather than to the CUR in Trento.

The service is also accessible to foreign-language speakers via a conference call with an interpreter. Currently, 38 languages are available at the CUR in Trento, with further languages available on request.

• 112 for the Deaf
  The 112 Sordi service in Italy is a free and accessible service designed to protect people with hearing loss, offering deaf and hard-of-hearing people quick and safe access to the Single Emergency Number 112. Through the 112 Sordi app, developed by ENS – the National Deaf Association, it is possible to send emergency requests without making voice calls. The app allows users with hearing loss to communicate via text messages, select the type of emergency (ambulance, police, Carabinieri or fire brigade) and automatically transmit their location via geolocation.

• E-Call
  An automatic and free emergency call system, mandatory in all new cars sold in the European Union since 2018. The system, which is activated in the event of a serious accident, makes a call to 112, providing the vehicle’s location via GPS coordinates. The service is currently managed nationwide by the CUR in Varese.

• Smartphones and Smartwatches
  These enable automatic emergency calls to be made if a fall or serious accident is detected. The CUR receives the GPS coordinates of the user’s location.

• iPhone Satellite Call (iPhone 14 or later)
  This allows you to contact the emergency services when no mobile network operator can connect the call due to a lack of mobile signal. The device guides the user through the process of sending a satellite message. This service is currently managed nationwide by the CUR in Saluzzo (CN). 

The Single Response Centre is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
