The Geothermal Project

The GEOTERM project makes it possible to assess where in Trentino it is most cost-effective to install heat pumps associated with geothermal probes, systems that allow the heating, cooling and hot water needs of buildings to be met entirely and in all seasons of the year

Description

The GEOTERM project aims to assess the suitability and potential of the Province of Trento for widespread use of geothermal heat pump systems for air conditioning and to provide the results of the work in cartographic form. The new provincial geothermal cartography, available in WebGIS mode, represents a valid planning tool, as well as for the responsible and sustainable development of this technology. Increasingly stringent regulations are directing the energy design of new buildings or those undergoing major renovations towards a progressive increase in the integration of renewable sources. According to Legislative Decree 28/2011, as of 1 January 2017 thermal energy production plants must be designed and built in such a way as to ensure simultaneous compliance with the coverage, through the use of energy produced by plants powered by renewable sources, of 50 per cent of the consumption envisaged for domestic hot water, heating and cooling. For public buildings, the integration obligations are increased by 10%. Geothermal heat pumps are an economically attractive solution and can be applied almost anywhere, allowing the transfer of heat from and to the underground, with high energy efficiency and in such a way that heating, cooling and domestic hot water needs are fully met all year round.
