General information
Infections caused by resistant microorganisms often fail to respond to standard treatments, resulting in longer hospital stays, higher healthcare costs, and an increased risk of death. Antibiotic-resistant microbes (AMRO) or superbugs are invisible, and can survive on surfaces for up to three days. This means that they can be transferred when an infected person simply touches another, or when the patient touches something on which the pathogen resides such as a stethoscope or TV remote control. Antibiotic resistance varies between geographical locations and is directly proportional to the use and misuse of antibiotics. Active surveillance systems are in place in all European Member States and Norway and should be considered as one of the main factors contributing to the reduction of 'AMRO' infections over the years.
The 'Anti-superbugs' project activity is structured in 7 workpackages comprising both research and management activities.

Goals
The effort made so far is not enough to eradicate 'AMRO'/superbug infections and with the Anti-superbugs PCP (pre-commercial-procurement) a pre-commercial procurement is defined and launched to challenge the industry to develop ICT solutions that can detect the presence of resistant microorganisms, give real-time feedback to the user and, at the same time, share the information with the healthcare provider's electronic registration systems that link the infection with the detection site.
