Val San Nicolò

Special Area of Conservation (SAC)

An endo-Alpine valley with considerable substrate variability (limestone, dolomite, basalts).
The site mainly affects the hydrographic right, occupied at the bottom by coniferous forests with stone pine, at the top by species-rich pingui grasslands.
Ridge and summit areas of the alpine belt are also included.

Description

Floristic richness, the presence of rare species (Forcella Paschè-Colle Ombert area) and important vegetation and landscape aspects - e.g. the sheer cliffs of Mearins - amply justify the designation of the site.
The site is of relevant national and/or provincial interest for the presence and reproduction of endangered animal species, important glacial relicts, exclusive and/or typical of the Alps.
Habitats of special interest not included in Annex I of Directive 92/43/EEC are present: large expanses of species-rich Festuca variae (Festucetum variae, Knautio-Trifolietum thalii) (30%).
