Re' di Castello - Breguzzo

Special Area of Conservation (SAC)

Massif of granite nature in western Trentino, with vast glaciers and furrowed in all directions by long glacial valleys, rich in water.
The slopes are covered by vast forests of conifers (spruce and larch, with nuclei of stone pine) and broadleaf trees (beech), interrupted by meadow clearings; on the valley floor and in the glacial cirque shelves there are frequent peat bogs and small lakes.
Beyond the forest edge, alpine pastures are widespread everywhere.

Description

A wonderful example of a crystalline, extensively glaciated alpine acrochorus, from which deep valleys branch off, with the entire vegetation type from the snowline to the valley floor.
The site is of relevant national and/or provincial interest for the presence and reproduction of endangered animal species, important glacial relicts, exclusive and/or typical of the Alps.
Annex 2 invertebrate species linked to forests in good natural condition are present.
