Monte Baldo of Brentonico

Special Area of Conservation (SAC)

The site covers the northernmost section of the Monte Baldo limestone chain (Monte Altissimo).
The lower part of Monte Altissimo is covered by extensive beech forests interspersed with large expanses of pingui pastures (spruce and silver fir are widespread on the northern slope). Higher up, there are alpine meadows, vast expanses of subalpine bushes (alders and mugoides) and rocky environments. In the area to the east, there is a characteristic limestone relief, located in the high mountain-subalpine belt, with the last patches of beech woodland giving way to subalpine bushes and, above all, pingy pastures, interspersed with rocky environments.

Description

The present plant landscape is a happy balance between naturalness and human silvopastoral activities.
The presence of endemic species in a landscape environment is exceptional.
The site is of relevant national and/or provincial interest for the presence and reproduction of endangered animal species, important glacial relicts, exclusive and/or typical of the Alps, as well as for the presence of invertebrates linked to forests in good natural condition.
A discrete contingent of endemic species and considerable environmental variability - combined with easy accessibility - make the Cornapiana area in particular entirely suitable for educational use.
An area of international interest for the transit of many medium- and long-range migratory species in the late summer and autumn (post-reproductive migration).
