Lessini Mountains - Small Dolomites

Special Area of Conservation (SAC)

A mountainous-dolomitic area located in a markedly pre-Alpine environment, characterised by pinnacles and vast screes interspersed with alpine meadows, mugo pines, extensive broadleaf and silver fir forests, as well as regularly alpine pastures and grasslands.
In the lower parts, there are significant patches of Illyrian beech forest and many valleys.
The site includes the small Vallarsa dolomites, the Baffelan subgroup, the head and left slope of the Val d'Ala and the alpine pastures of Lessinia.

Description

An area of high naturalness that represents the western boundary of many eastern gravitational species.
A significant group of endemic species is present.
The site is of significant national and/or provincial interest for the presence and reproduction of endangered animal species, important glacial relicts, exclusive and/or typical of the Alps.
Presence of invertebrates linked to mature and intact broadleaf forests, with some important floristic species. In the montane-mesophilous woods, yew and holly are widespread.
In the westernmost part, extensive pasture areas are still regularly managed with cattle grazing.
