Lake Loppio

Special Area of Conservation (SAC)

A vast lake basin in the valley incision between the Monte Bondone and Monte Baldo groups, which until 30 years ago occupied Lake Loppio, which then dried up. At the bottom of the ancient lake basin, a very rich vegetation of wet and marshy meadows has now developed, in the midst of which the white willow is spreading. Along some stretches of the banks there are peat banks with a rare vegetation of Cyperaceae.

Description

An environment of considerable interest, with remnants of natural vegetation along the banks and extensive colonisation of pioneer species on the bottom (formed of lake clays) of the ancient lake basin. This is a vitally important biotope for the reproduction of many species of amphibians and reptiles. The site is also of importance for the nesting, stopping and/or wintering of bird species that are protected or in strong decline, and/or have a localised distribution in the Alps.
Habitats of special interest not included in Annex I of Directive 92/43/EEC are present: Caricetum elatae (Magnocaricion) (5%), Alnetea glutinosae (10%), Phragmition (15%).
Priority Habitat 6210 (wonderful orchid bloom).
