Brenta di Caldonazzo

Provincial nature reserve - Biotope not established

The biotope consists of the initial stretch of the River Brenta and includes a tiny part of Lake Caldonazzo at the outlet.
It is an important nesting site for many species of water birds.

Description

This biotope is of great naturalistic importance for the ichthyofauna and avifauna.
As far as fish are concerned, the presence of Eel (Anguilla anguilla), Tench (Tinca tinca), Pike (Esox lucius) and Brown Trout (Salmo [trutta] trutta), among others, has been recorded.
A total of 35 bird species were recorded within the biotope, confirming the fact that, despite the fact that the area has been heavily altered by human action, the station is of fundamental importance as a nesting site for many waterbird species.
The most valuable species of fauna are grebes such as the Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollsi) and the Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus), rails and, in particular, the Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus), the Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), the Coot (Fulica atra), and acrocephalians such as the Common Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus palustris), the Common Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus), and the Great Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus).
Grebes are linked to the presence of bodies of water with sufficiently natural characteristics, particularly in terms of the presence of a band of hygrophilous vegetation species along the banks.
Rallids, on the other hand, with the exception of the Coot, are more tied to the vegetation bordering the banks than to the water mirrors.
Similarly, acrocephalians nest in the vegetation of the banks, but the Reed Warbler and the Common Warbler prefer reed thickets, while the Green Warbler prefers shrub belts.

The biotope area, having long been subjected to a considerable degree of anthropisation, is of no particular interest from a floristic point of view. The main association present in the biotope is the marsh reed (Phragmitetum australis). There are also other species typical of wet meadows such as Lythrum salicaria, Stachispalustris and Lysimachiavulgaris, and other species of lesser importance.
