Description
In addition to this, the peat bogs included in the biotope, being located at the head of the Rio Novella and some tributary streams of the Rio Pescara, play a fundamental hydrogeological role in guaranteeing water quality and the water regime.
The peat bogs are located in basins above moraine deposits abandoned by glaciers, where considerable thicknesses of peat have developed as a result of the slow accumulation of organic substances.
The vegetation of the proposed biotope area is typical of the subalpine plain. The woods surrounding the wetlands are in fact part of the forest associations belonging to the needle-leaved forests, and more specifically to the Piceetum subalpinum.
Numerous arthropod species populate the peat environment. Among the amphibians and reptiles, exclusive to these places, the mountain frog (Rana temporaria), the alpine newt (Triturus alpestris ) and the viviparous lizard (Lacerta vivipara) are worth mentioning.
Although not strictly related to the peat bogs of Monte Sous, the ornithofauna nesting in the spruce (Picea excelsa) and rhododendron (Rhododendron ferrugineum) and dwarf juniper (Juniperus communis ssp. nana) forests is certainly interesting, as it is representative of high-altitude Alpine ornithoenoses. Rare and valuable species can be found here, such as the black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) and the capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) or, among birds of prey, the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos).
