Adamello

Special Area of Conservation (SAC)

A stupendous example of a crystalline, extensively glaciated alpine acrochore, from which deep valleys branch off, with the entire vegetation type from the snowline to the valley floor. The site is of relevant national and/or provincial interest for the presence and reproduction of endangered animal species, important glacial relicts, exclusive and/or typical of the Alps. Annex 2 invertebrate species linked to forests in good natural condition are present.

Description

A massif of granitic nature in western Trentino, with vast glaciers and furrowed in all directions by long glacial valleys, rich in water; the slopes are covered with vast coniferous (spruce and larch, with nuclei of stone pine) and broadleaf (beech) forests, interrupted by meadow clearings; on the valley floor and in the glacial cirque shelves there are frequent peat bogs and small lakes. Beyond the forest edge, alpine pastures are widespread everywhere.
