Under the chairmanship of Tyrolean President Günther Platter and on the initiative of Vice-President Josef Geisler, the agricultural policy makers of the Arge Alp regions are meeting in Innsbruck to tackle the issue of cross-border wolf management with concrete measures. The focal points are the cross-border description of the conservation status of the wolf population in the Alpine region by means of coordinated monitoring, a continuous exchange of data also on the effects of the wolf's presence, and the harmonisation of genetic survey methods in the medium term.
"We are taking matters into our own hands. Our common priority is the preservation of widespread agricultural activity in mountain areas, and in particular the maintenance of alpine pasture. The problem of wolves is not a problem that one region or one country can solve alone. That is why we are forming alliances throughout the Alps, starting with Arge Alp,' explain Tyrolean Governor Günther Platter and his deputy, Josef Geisler. Already in 2018 and 2020, Arge Alp pointed out in its resolutions the continuing increase in the wolf population and the related problems, especially for Alpine agriculture. The Provincial Councillor for Agriculture, Forestry, Hunting and Fisheries, Giulia Zanotelli, representing Trentino, also took part in the meeting via video link; the coordinator of the large carnivores sector at the Wildlife Service, Claudio Groff, was also present.
