'There is disappointment, of course, but above all there is disbelief. By dint of searching for quibble after quibble, one does not realise that the real world is something else and that citizens, day after day, sentence after sentence, are losing faith in the institutions'. This was said by the president of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti, upon hearing the news of the new stop to the ordinance to kill two wolves belonging to the pack that has been causing serious damage for months following repeated attacks on a farm in the mountains of Ala.
'It is difficult to try to understand the reasons for this and other judiciary pronouncements. The technical legal aspect matters little to our community, which is seriously concerned about the exponential growth of large carnivores in a small territory like ours,' adds Fugatti, also recalling the stances taken by numerous mayors. "I believe that we have lost our sense of measure and the order of priorities, putting ideology and driven animalism before the value of human life and the labours of men and women who have been trying for centuries to preserve the mountains by trying to live there."
'This is what we should be defending: the right to live on our land,' Fugatti concludes, 'not the intransigent positions of those who think, quite wrongly, that this is my personal crusade. But those who have administered and administer Trentino at various levels already know this'.
