Data from the new weather radar on Mount Macaion are now available. The installation of the new generation equipment was completed at the end of October 2023, as part of a joint project between the Autonomous Provinces of Trento and Bolzano. After 22 years of operation, the old weather radar on Macaion was therefore replaced with a new dual-polarisation radar. This instrument will have a range of different applications: from the needs of civil protection to those of agriculture. A sector, the latter, of absolute importance and for which it is essential to know in advance of a possible impact of hail on crops, to give just one example. Combined with artificial intelligence, developed in Trentino by the Fondazione Bruno Kessler, it will make it possible to better read the course of the disturbances and to have a faithful and up-to-date picture. "In recent years, an increase in the frequency of extreme weather phenomena has been observed. In this context, the new radar provides crucial data for the Civil Protection and, at the same time, represents a valuable resource for the entire community," emphasises the director of the Risk Prevention Service and CUE of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Stefano Fait, who adds: "The more accurately natural events are predicted, the more we can be ready to prevent them and thus reduce possible damage.
