An ARGE ALP technical conference on the sustainable management of water on alpine pastures was held today in Quinto, in the Canton of Ticino. Case studies from the various alpine regions were highlighted and compared as part of a project in which the Autonomous Province of Trento also took part.
One of the day's speakers was PAT Forest Service manager Giovanni Giovannini, who presented the Trentino experience of storing water on alpine pastures.
In Trentino, the total surface area of pastures reaches 40,000 hectares where about 70,000 animals (sheep, goats, cattle and horses) graze, with 570 active alpine pastures, of which about 80 transform milk into alpine pasture. Water storage and conservation is therefore an important issue for alpine pasture activities and the successful strategy adopted makes use of modern reservoirs, with construction models and materials that reduce damage and risks to people and animals. There are also naturalistic reservoirs in the area, which not only represent a valuable element of the alpine landscape, but also ensure the maintenance of a high level of biodiversity of the flora and fauna associated with wetlands.
