Reimbursement of expenses for adapting means of transport for people with disabilities

  • Active

The scheme enables people with disabilities to claim reimbursement for expenses incurred in adapting motor vehicles, whether driven by the beneficiaries themselves or used primarily for their transport.

Description

The grant is awarded for:

  • the use of the vehicle in the course of work
  • use to travel to the workplace or a training venue
  • other purposes.

Who it's for

Persons with permanent mobility disabilities who meet the requirements set out in the criteria approved by Provincial Council Resolution No. 388 of 20 March 2026 may apply for a refund, provided that they:

  • personally drive a vehicle with a special driving licence or a vehicle for which a driving licence is not required;
  • due to their personal circumstances, whether temporary or permanent, do not drive the vehicle themselves and use the grant to adapt a vehicle used primarily by third parties for their private transport.

The person with a disability (whether as the driver or a passenger) must meet the following requirements:

  • meet the medical requirements as determined by the health commissions responsible for driving licences, by the medical commission tasked with assessing disability status, by another competent public commission, or by a specific medical certificate;
  • have been registered as a resident in a municipality of the Autonomous Province of Trento for at least 3 years;
  • an ICEF indicator of less than 0.70;
  • be the owner or beneficial owner of the vehicle to be adapted, or the holder of a finance lease or a sale agreement with retention of title, or have ordered the vehicle to be adapted from the dealer;
  • hold the appropriate special driving licence.

The application may be submitted by the user or by their legal representative (e.g. guardian, curator, support administrator, or parent in the case of minors).

Please note that expenses relating to the purchase of vehicles are not eligible; only those relating to their adaptation are covered.

The following persons are not eligible for the grant:

  • have applied for and received grants from other public bodies for the same vehicle and for the same purpose (tax relief for people with disabilities remains eligible);
  • have previously received this grant for the adaptation of the same type of vehicle and for the same purposes (driving by the person with a disability or transport of the person with a disability by a third party), before four years have elapsed from the date of the decision granting the previous grant.

The grant for vehicles already fitted as standard with an automatic gearbox or other assistive mechanism to accommodate the person’s permanent reduced mobility is calculated by taking as the eligible expenditure the difference in cost between the standard version of the vehicle and the adapted version with automatic gearbox provided by the manufacturer.
