Foreign Vehicles - Import

The service is open to all interested parties.

Following the entry into force of the Single Document, the management of the import of vehicles from abroad is carried out through agencies, a list of which is given below:

List of Agencies

1. registration documents (e.g. from Germany Teil I and Teil II); any updates and test certificates in the descriptive lines must be translated and the translation certified by a court or Justice of the Peace; non-harmonised registration documents (e.g. Beiblatt) must also be translated and certified. It must be inferred from the documents or supplementary documentation that the vehicle has been struck off in the country of origin; if the vehicle has not been struck off, the number plates must be surrendered upon registration (except for countries where the number plates are owned, e.g. Switzerland);
2. technical data issued by the manufacturer or a European certificate of conformity (COC) or technical data issued by an authorised firm (e.g. for Germany TUV) and endorsed by the registration office (e.g. Germany LAND). These documents are not required if the vehicle was previously registered in Italy.
3. photocopy of the owner's identification document;
4. for non-EU citizens, photocopy of residence permit;
5. photocopy of purchase contract (if purchased from a private individual) with the seller's document attached, or photocopy of invoice (if purchased from a foreign dealer).

General information:

• if the vehicle from abroad is registered in Italy in the name of a company or sole proprietorship, it must be registered with the Inland Revenue as an instrumental good;
• private individuals buying abroad and importing into Italy will have to go to the Revenue Office to register the vehicle;
• if the vehicle, purchased from a dealer, is less than 6 months old and less than 6000 km, VAT must be paid in Italy;
• if the vehicle abroad is already owned by the person applying for registration in Italy, a declaration of ownership must be signed and notarised at the office, and a 16 euro revenue stamp must be presented;
• in the case of a new, never registered vehicle, the documents referred to in points 1 and 2 are replaced by the original European Certificate of Conformity (COC);
• if the vehicle comes from a non-EU country, the vehicle documents must be apostilled (notarised by the authority of the country of origin) and the customs document proving the customs obligations must be presented. With the exception of Switzerland, the EU directives must be those in force at the time of registration in Italy.
