The Trentino System of Research Innovation identifies one of the strategic axes on which the exercise of provincial autonomy has been most developed, through
- a process of historical focus on the high-level research dimension
- a constant effort of coordination and intermediation between its promoters and users
- a multi-stage legislative reform accompanied by substantial investments
- evaluation bodies and criteria in line with the evolution of the system
Research and innovation in Trentino benefit from major public and private investments and long-term structural policies.
Some of the fields of scientific and technological excellence in our area are:
- Artificial intelligence, computational science and quantum information science;
- Agribusiness, green biotechnology, enhancement of natural resources and biodiversity of the territory;
- Energy, bioconversion of waste for energy purposes and climate change technologies;
- Robotics, microsystems and advanced sensor technology;
- Life sciences, medtech, preventive medicine and bioinformatics;
- Humanities and social sciences.
The methods of public intervention are mainly regulated by Provincial Law no. 14 of 2 August 2005, which refers to public research, and by the Provincial Law on incentives for enterprises (Provincial Law no. 6 of 13 December 1999) concerning interventions in the Industrial Research sector.
The main subjects involved in the Industrial Research sector
Research and Mining Industry Service of the Autonomous Province of Trento
The Service, which is part of the Economic Development Research and Labour Department, has in its various functions the task of drawing up the Multiannual Research Programme (PPR), which constitutes the institutional framework for planning research innovation initiatives.
It also coordinates the Committee for Research and Innovation (CRI), which is the Province's technical-scientific advisory and evaluation body, based on Provincial Law no. 14 of 2 August 2005 and is appointed by the Provincial Council for the duration of the legislature.
The APIAE Agency
The Provincial Agency for the Encouragement of Economic Activities (APIAE) is the body of the administration created to make more effective the activity of granting and disbursing aid, contributions and financial facilities, however denominated, in favour of entrepreneurs and other subjects operating in all economic sectors with the exception of agriculture.
Trentino Sviluppo Spa
Trentino Sviluppo S.p.A., wholly owned by the public sector (the Autonomous Province of Trento is the sole shareholder), is the system's instrument for carrying out activities to support, develop and promote, in Italy and abroad, economic activities in Trentino.
Its activities are multifaceted, ranging from territorial marketing to the real estate sector to interventions of an intangible nature, such as technology transfer and qualified consultancy services for enterprises. If we wanted to find an overall definition of Trentino Sviluppo's work, we could define it as a 'facilitator of the production system'.

Mechatronics Pole
The Mechatronics industrial and technical-scientific project is coordinated by a mixed public-private task force with interdisciplinary skills.
Companies and research centres network to promote technology transfer. Covering an area of 14 hectares, Polo Meccatronica in Rovereto is a common and dynamic space where companies, students and researchers design, produce and do research together, fostering the social and economic development of the Trentino production system.
Since 2017, the Pole has been hosting the ProM Facility, a fast prototyping and product development laboratory, financed by the European Union, which is unique in Italy because it offers companies an integrated platform for the design, development, realisation, verification and validation of production systems and processes.
Progetto Manifattura, the sustainability hub
The historic Manifattura Tabacchi in Rovereto has been converted into a centre for industrial innovation in the fields of green building, sustainable mobility, sports technology and life sciences.
Under construction in the hub are the TESS-Lab, a network of laboratories dedicated to industrial research on infrastructure, energy storage systems and distributed energy systems, and the Open Science Park as part of the new Life Sciences Hub with cutting-edge laboratories, shared technology platforms, spaces for companies and co-working environments.
