Description

What the project is

The project involves the placement of staff with language skills in pre-schools or kindergartens.

The key elements proposed for the approach to languages in early childhood are as follows:

  • The natural approach, to bring children closer to 'other' languages in the natural, everyday contexts of life, focusing in particular on playful aspects and spontaneous, emotionally dense relationships, which facilitate and support learning;
  • The cultural approach, to recognise the relevance of the culturally connoted elements that each language brings with it. For the children, therefore, encountering the "other language" also means encountering an "other culture" of which the ISA (language approach provider) becomes the "bearer";
  • The integrated approach, to identify language approach as an integral part of the design of the school or nursery in which the action takes place. Children experience, in the school or educational context, situations supported by a different language code but integrated into the overall learning experience that the school or nursery offers.

The Service is provided by the economic operator "ATI CIEFFE S.r.l. (mandatary), C.F./P.I. 01954340228, with head office in Trento in via Brennero n. 322, cap 38121 and ISIT S.r.l. (mandatary), C.F./P.I. 01576370223, with head office in Trento in vicolo S. Maria Maddalena n. 22. For information: www.ci-effe.net.

Who it is aimed at

Children aged between 18 months and 6 years attending directly or indirectly managed public nurseries and pre-schools in the Autonomous Province of Trento. The project involves more than 100 facilities in the territory and employs approximately 70 language approach assistants (ISA) each year.

Which languages are

German and English.

Aims and expected results

Language is offered as an experience to be lived in natural and spontaneous contexts. This makes it possible to create an idea of linguistic plurality in the children's minds and to recognise their role as active protagonists within the learning process, since it is they themselves who seek out and build spontaneous relationships with an 'other' language and culture.

The project aims to make children aware of the presence of other peoples' languages and cultures by stimulating divergent thinking and developing in them intercultural awareness, and consequently, respect for diversity and integration.
