Applied research refers to industrial research and pre-competitive development activity.
Who can access the contributions?
On the basis of the opinion of the Technical-Scientific Committee for Research and Innovation, both large and small and medium-sized enterprises whose operating units are located in the Province of Trento can access grants under Provincial Law 6/99.
However, only large enterprises can obtain grants for feasibility studies that precede industrial research and pre-competitive development activities. The basic requirements to be eligible for grants are the novelty and originality of the knowledge to be acquired, its usefulness for increasing competitiveness and development, and the guarantee that the results of the research will be used by the company in the province. Subject to the opinion of the technical-scientific committee, subsidies may also be granted for projects that do not guarantee that the results will be used by the enterprise in the provincial territory, provided that they present characteristics of absolute excellence from a scientific and technological point of view. Additional requirements are requested of large enterprises.
A special discourse is reserved for research centres of large enterprises that only carry out research activities. These centres are entitled to the facilities provided for by the law, if they carry out an investment in the territory of the Province of Trento for an amount equal to the facilities received within five years from the date of conclusion of the research project. A company that does not have its registered office in the Province of Trento may also benefit from the grant, provided that the research project was carried out in collaboration with one of the research institutes located in the Province of Trento or with the University of Trento.
Expenditure eligible for funding are those for feasibility studies, research projects (including technical amortisation, personnel costs, consultancy services, additional overheads as a result of the research activity) and those for research commissioned to third parties.
Finally, it should be noted that PAT promotes the temporary assignment (not exceeding one year) of researchers and technicians from research institutes operating in the province to local companies. The aim of this collaboration is twofold: to provide professional training for the researcher and to acquire technical assistance for the company.
