Description
The designation of ‘hiking refuge’ is a classification that applies only to existing establishments. This category of accommodation comprises two types of establishment:
- hiking refuges already classified as such prior to 2008 (the year in which the new regulations governing mountaineering facilities came into force);
- former mountaineering refuges that did not comply with the new maximum structural and functional standards introduced in 2008 (e.g. rooms with en-suite bathrooms, maximum volume per bed exceeding the regulatory limit, etc.).
Consequently, it is currently not possible to register as a hiking refuge any establishments that were not previously alpine refuges.
Provincial law stipulates that the regulations governing mountain huts apply to hiking huts as regards the services offered to guests and the obligations incumbent upon the operator.
