Description
The accelerometer network currently consists of ten monitoring stations equipped with three-dimensional accelerometers. The purpose of these stations is to record ground motion during earthquakes and to transmit the data obtained in real time. The main purpose of the accelerometer network is, in fact, to record ground acceleration levels during earthquakes with their epicentre in Trentino or in neighbouring regions. These measurements therefore make it possible to assess the level of acceleration to which buildings and infrastructure in the area are subjected.
Since 2013, thanks in part to a collaboration withthe National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the data recorded by the Trentino accelerometer network have been shared and processed in accordance with the highest international standards. Furthermore, the recordings made by the Trentino accelerometer network are used to compile so-called ground motion maps (the ShakeMap project), which show the spatial distribution of ground motion levels caused by an earthquake.
