General information
The 'RockTheAlps' project deals with the ecosystem services of forests in their role as rockfall and avalanche protection.
All the results of the project will support the governance of territorial authorities that are responsible for risk prevention and management.
Among the products envisaged by the project will be a Rockfall Protection Forest Map for the Alpine Space, a pilot application for avalanche protection forest mapping, a catalogue of emblematic protection forests, specific webgis tools for consultation and guidelines for the planning and management of these ecosystem services.
The planned activities are:
- development of an innovative methodology for the assessment of landslides in the Alpine space, using harmonised criteria and objective data;
- construction of a tool for the evaluation of the forest protection function against landslides, expressed according to a risk reduction index;
- realisation of the first harmonised map of the protective services performed by forest ecosystems against landslides for the entire Alpine space;
- implementation of a model for the economic valuation of forest ecosystems in their landslide protection services;
- implementation of guidelines, a Spatial Information System and recommendations for a sustainable valuation of the landslide protection services of forest ecosystems.
Goals
The project intends to create a common methodology for a harmonised GIS mapping, for the whole Alpine Space, of forests with protection functions and to prepare guidelines and good practices to stimulate management policies. The project is implemented by capitalising on experiences from previous projects and in particular on the Rockfor3D methodology developed with other Alpine Space projects.
