RESALIO

Exploration of enhancement scenarios in the Stelvio National Park through the Pejo3000 ropeway.

General information

This is a project activated by the Trentino branch of the Stelvio National Park and the University of Trento - Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering (DICAM), within the framework of the2023 - 2025 University and Research Guideline Act provided for in the Provincial Development Plan.

The aim is to explore scenarios for the enhancement of the protected area - and in particular of Val di Peio - through the existing Pejo 3000 cableway.

The lift between Peio Fonti and the upper Val de la Mite, built in the early 2000s to support the Pejo3000 ski area, due to its presence and number of passages - both in the summer and winter season - is of interest for planning its use in a way that is conscious of the Park's values.

The project is part of the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism, a sustainability certification obtained by the Stelvio National Park in 2019. One of the actions shared between the Park and the local community was precisely on this theme.

The project was conceived as part of the collaboration between the Sustainable Development and Protected Areas Service - which manages the Trentino sector of the Stelvio National Park - and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the University of Trento. The project coordinators are Prof. Sara Favargiotti and Dr. Chiara Chioni.

Goals

The project therefore sets out to rethink the value of the existing cableway installation as a means of communicating the values and rules of the protected area, and of disseminating knowledge about it.

general objectives for the valorisation of the existing cableway system with attention to the territorial, environmental and landscape systems, ecological and social connectivity (Park values, challenges and strategic themes: integrated mobility; ecological impact; mountain resilience and environmental sustainability; care and valorisation of the landscape; territorial requalification; integrated communication)
specific objectives for each of the points expressed in the general strategic vision (operational guidelines);
● a typological manual to accompany actions and project strategies;
● innovative methods and tools for the participation of citizens in the definition of new modes of use;
communication and dissemination also through involvement and comparison with national and international realities and experiences.

KICK-OFF MEETING
March 2024
Project presentation to the population

THEMATIC TABLES
May and June 2024
Four meetings to explore similar cases in the Alpine context, with a focus on accessibility and use of protected areas.

CO-DESIGN WORKSHOPS
July 2024
Workshops that saw the voluntary participation of professionals interested in the topic - Andrea Bombasaro, Daniele Cappelletti, Elisa Iachelini, Matteo Marchese, Enrica Mauro, Roberto Paoli, Alessandro Riello - and some undergraduates - Alice de Martini of Valle Aperta and Luca Vernesoni.

The outcome of the work is a number of design proposals involving the building corresponding to the cableway departure station in the locality of Peio Fonti, with the aim of reorganising the elevations and installing a sort of portal to ensure greater awareness of the use of the facility as a means of access to the Park territory.

REALISATION OF THE PROTOTYPE
August 2024
On the basis of the indications formulated during the July workshop, in a subsequent workshop at the beginning of August an initial installation was realised consisting of a bench integrated with an illustrative panel and positioned along the south elevation of the cableway station.

The installation is intended to concretise the workshop experience and leave for common reflection an initial sign aimed at communicating the Park's presence and values, making visitors aware of the context in which they are moving, and raising awareness for a responsible visit to this spectacular alpine territory, recognised as a National Park.
The installation, made entirely of wood by Stelvio National Park workers, is a reversible work that will eventually be removed during the winter period for snow removal.
